Why You Are Muted on Social Media

If you feel this is about you, it just may be.

Now, before I get into this rant I want to be clear. My intention for writing this is not to call you out, I hope this helps you.

You see, we’ve met before and you are a pleasant, fun person to hang out and speak with but when it comes to online… that is a different story.

Every time you comment on a post, it is almost always a complaint, a negative spin on the positive news. Now, if you were doing this to troll you would be ignored, blocked and that would be it. I truly believe you feel you have good intentions though.

Things are broken in this industry, they aren’t perfect and in some cases they are far from it. Complaining constantly with no action will not fix these, tagging the companies most likely won’t reach the right person and if it does they would likely be uninterested in speaking with you.

I’ve seen this happen before, people stay connects as “friends” or “followers” but mute others because of their opinions, the spam they post, or because they only connected with them after meeting once and don’t want to be rude.

Here’s why I want you to think about what you are posting on socials. You are currently looking for work, you are using your real name, you are known by many. Imagine a recruiter going to your profile, looking at your activity and seeing that most of your comments are complaints. Do you honestly think they will reach out to you, or have an interest in speaking with you?

Here’s a suggestion that may help you out. Write all the things you want to say in a note in your computer. Let them sit for a day or two, then go read them again and ask yourself “if someone posted this how would I react”?

I know that I too am now guilty of ranting online but my hope is that this connects with you and makes a positive impact on your career, the opportunities you will gain and your growth (as we are all growing).

That’s it, I just had to get this off my chest and hope this helps.

Sincerely, a concerned friend
